As instructed by the game, hold the attack button to unleash a charged attack to smash the wooden beams to get the bridge open. Once the crystal spiders and orc archers are all gone and the camera changes view, down the bridge. Even then other characters are more useful. Rannek, as you'll soon see, is fairly useless until he gets really, really damn powerful. If you need a fast character to whack the little crystal spiders, switch quickly to Zhai and beat them off Illius so he can again conjure up some magical hurt to lay on the archers across the chasm. Illius will be needed at the bridge to kill the orc archers and to lower the bridge. If there's a team super ready, do the suicide and gain some bonus XP. Blast the orcs coming out of the holes, grab the gold, and follow the path to a crumbling bridge. Switching heroes is also another key to being a Demon Stone master, but you probably already guessed that already. There's some gold in the forge, and you can quickly switch out one character to another, grab the gold, and switch back if needed. By standing back, you can magic missile your foes or melee them off the ledge. Use Illius (although switch out to another character if he or she has a suicide ready) since the other two can run up and start hacking the orcs. As they gain experience they will gain levels and can purchase new moves (combos) or upgrade old ones with experience points.
